NARNIA at the Institute of Materials Science
The Institute of Materials Science (IMS) at the N.C.S.R. "Demokritos" is one of the partners in the NARNIA project. The Nationa Center for Scientific Research "Demokritos", situated in the northeastern suburbs of Athens, is the largest research center in Greece. It comprises 8 institutes covering all fields of basic research in natural science. Since more than 40 years, the Institute of Materials Science hosts a research programme on archaeological materials. During these years the institute gained an expertise in studying a large variety of archaeological materials, such as ceramics, metals, marble, glass and ancient building materials. Original approaches to studies of ancient materials were developed as well as new methods were applied. Furthermore, the research was broadened towards for example paleoenvironmental studies or the development of new materials for the conservation of antiquities.
As one of the partners in the NARNIA project the IMS is collaborating mainly in the work areas ceramics, metallurgy and paleoenvironment. The IMS will organize several of the workshops.
