The Solid State NMR Laboratory of the Institute of Materials Science was founded in 1962, and is the oldest Solid State NMR Lab in Greece. It is equipped with four solid state multinuclear broadband NMR spectrometers in the frequency range (5 - 800 MHz), four superconducting magnets (9.4 Tesla, 4.7 Tesla (two), and 2.35 Tesla) and a resistive electromagnet (0- 2 T). Various types of cryostats and ovens are available to perform NMR experiments in the temperature range 1.6 K – 1000 K. The basic research includes applications of 1D and 2D NMR and NQR techniques in magnetic and superconductive systems, such as Colossal Magnetoresistive (CMR) manganese perovskites, molecular magnets, MgB2, fullerenes, magnetic nanoparticles, etc. The applied research, includes the synthesis and study of dispersions of magnetic nanoparticles (ferrofluids) aiming to biomedical applications (MRI contrast agents, magnetic hyperthermia for cancer treatment, etc.), as well as the study of cement and concrete hydration, by applying NMR and ultrasonic techniques (conducted in collaboration with the Greek Cement Industries TITAN and AGET).
